1) What is ISO?

Because “International Organization for Standardization” would have different acronyms in different languages (“ISO” in English, “OIN” in French, etc.), its founders chose “ISO”, derived from the Greek isos, meaning “equal”.

And still, an international standard is necessary? For what purpose?

A whole string of questions probably follow.

Providing responses for those questions, we will support you in getting to see “ISO” in small steps.

When it comes to needs for standardization, the first case ever addressed was “the Great Baltimore Fire” which raged on February 7th, 1904. After the fire being reported to the fire station of Baltimore City, located in the east of the US, units from nearby cities arrived at once such as from New York City, Washington, D.C. and Philadelphia. Despite this, the fire burned 36 hours, and 2 trillion yen (in the current amount) worth of damage was done in the end.

How did this happen?
